HAMILTON – Cultures clashed at a Ravalli County Commission meeting this week focused on the future of a 58-acre parcel of land in the southern reaches of the Bitterroot Valley.
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes bought the land in 1998 to protect an important cultural area known as the Medicine Tree.
Earlier this year, the county received notification that the Bureau of Indian Affairs was considering an application from the tribes that would place the land in trust with the federal government.
The commission voted in April to oppose the application, saying it would lose $808 the county receives annually in property taxes.
Five members of the tribes traveled to Hamilton on Wednesday to explain their connection to that piece of ground and answer other questions.
County Commissioner Greg Chilcott wanted to know how – “out of a billion trees on the Bitterroot Forest” – the tribes came to select the one that’s now located just next to U.S. Highway 93 south of Darby.

Buddy, appx 5-yr neutered M lab mix, FREE to the right new home; owner moving to assisted living, can't bring him along.

Owner does not have Facebook: please CALL Ellie 775-0176.

Buddy is good with cats and other dogs and LOVES children. He sticks close to home, will bark at deer until they leave "his" property, and is housetrained. He is a little overweight, not really leash trained, and is microchipped and will have his vaccinations updated soon.

Hoping to find a great home for him soon, so he can go right from "Mom" to "new Mom/Dad" and won't have to go to the shelter at all.
The bells are ringing at kettles around the region...Salvation Army Campaigns are now under way, along with a letter appeal.
Trail Major Wilf Harbin says they're Christmas kettle goal is 33-thousand dollars, which will help them meet their needs for 2013 and 2014.
At Walmart, Waneta Plaza, Shoppers and soon the liquor store...meanwhile he says they have 100 volunteers helping out over the holiday.
In Nelson Major Yvonne Borrows says kettles are now up at the CIBC and the Chako Mika Mall.
They're hoping to raise 24-thousand dollars with Kettles and the money raised will set the budget for next years' Christmas hampers.
Borrows says the food bank has remained open, after having to close down last year for a short time when they ran out of food..but they're busy, she says they've seen a roughly 5 percent increase across the board for all of their programs.

The Chamber of Commerce is working with the City of Republic to revive a tradition and have a community caroling/tree lighting evening in the park. We are tentatively scheduled for December 7. The plan is for the city to decorate the live tree at the north end of the park. They will probably need quite a few more lights and ornaments due to the amount the tree has grown since the last time this happened. If anyone would like to donate lights or ornaments, or make any ornaments for our town Christmas tree, please take them to City Hall. I will post more details here (and a flyer around town) as we work them out. Please share this information and plan to attend and participate!

The CHP is confirming one person has died in a crash at the Clavey River Bridge in the Stanislaus National Forest. The Tuolumne County Coroner has been called to the scene.

A large hay truck went off the Clavey River Bridge near Cottonwood Road where much of the current BAER Team work is taking place. The CHP is reporting that it went about 100-150 ft. over the bridge.

An air ambulance and the Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue rope team were dispatched earlier. In addition, a hazmat crew is responding because there are reports of diesel fuel running into the river. We'll pass along more information as details become available.

Click here for a map of the wreck site.

Update 12:20 pm: The CHP reports officers are directing one-way traffic over the Clavey River Bridge. The Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue rope team are now on the scene.

Update 2:40 pm: The CHP reports crews are working to tow the truck from where it landed after plunging 100 to 150 feet over the bridge. Officers have been directing one-way traffic on the bridge for more than an hour and a half. The name of the victim is not being released pending notification of the family.

Strong winds have whipped up a major, late-season wildfire in the hills of northeastern Sonoma County Friday, burning 2,000 acres so far, damaging one geothermal power plant and forcing evacuations of energy plant workers in the remote area.

The blaze, one of two large fires burning in Wine Country Friday, was fanned by winds that were gusting in the early hours up to 45 mph.

The so-called McCabe Fire started around 2 a.m. Friday morning in The Geysers area, a large geothermal energy field on the Sonoma—Lake county border.

It was burning in steep, rugged terrain covered by oak woodland and grassland in Sonoma County and moving toward Lake County, said CalFire Capt. Scott McLean. More than 340 firefighters were already on the blaze by 5 p.m., with at least an additional 60 personnel from local departments on order.
