The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes bought the land in 1998 to protect an important cultural area known as the Medicine Tree.
Earlier this year, the county received notification that the Bureau of Indian Affairs was considering an application from the tribes that would place the land in trust with the federal government.
The commission voted in April to oppose the application, saying it would lose $808 the county receives annually in property taxes.
Five members of the tribes traveled to Hamilton on Wednesday to explain their connection to that piece of ground and answer other questions.
County Commissioner Greg Chilcott wanted to know how – “out of a billion trees on the Bitterroot Forest” – the tribes came to select the one that’s now located just next to U.S. Highway 93 south of Darby.

An air ambulance and the Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue rope team were dispatched earlier. In addition, a hazmat crew is responding because there are reports of diesel fuel running into the river. We'll pass along more information as details become available.
Click here for a map of the wreck site.

Strong winds have whipped up a major, late-season wildfire in the hills of northeastern Sonoma County Friday, burning 2,000 acres so far, damaging one geothermal power plant and forcing evacuations of energy plant workers in the remote area.
The blaze, one of two large fires burning in Wine Country Friday, was fanned by winds that were gusting in the early hours up to 45 mph.
The so-called McCabe Fire started around 2 a.m. Friday morning in The Geysers area, a large geothermal energy field on the Sonoma—Lake county border.
It was burning in steep, rugged terrain covered by oak woodland and grassland in Sonoma County and moving toward Lake County, said CalFire Capt. Scott McLean. More than 340 firefighters were already on the blaze by 5 p.m., with at least an additional 60 personnel from local departments on order.
