TRAILS — A hot band is music to the ears of rail-trail developers in northeastern Washington this week.
The Ferry County Rail Trail is getting a boost by members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who've autographed a skateboard that's being auctioned on eBay this week to benefit the 501(c)(3) non-profit Ferry County Rail Trail Partners
The group is developing a 25-mile trail in northeastern Washington between Republic and Canada, mostly along the Kettle River.
This isn't the first time top-name musicians have stepped up for the cause.
How do these big names get interested in a trail in a Washington county populated by fewer than 8,000 people — a fraction the size of the audience that signs up for just one of their concerts?
Bob Whittaker, tour manager for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, also lives in a cabin near Republic and has been helping spearhead the project. He got the Peppers to sign the skateboard in Brazil on Nov. 9, 2013 when the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs opened for the Peppers while on tour in Rio de Janeiro.
Whittaker, son of Jim Whittaker, who was on the first American team to climb Mount Everest, purchased the skateboard. The eBay auction item also includes the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' day sheet, set list and Bob's passes for the event in Brazil.
This skateboard isn't just a pretty wall hanger. The 9.5” x 34” Hendrix model, mid-sized longboard deck was handcrafted, signed and dated by the artisans at El Phante in Rio de Janeiro.

In a political battle reminiscent of the Peloponnesian War, elected officials in Pierce County have duked it out over zoning for marijuana businesses with long-term consequences yet to be known.First, county council members approved rules saying that until the feds tell them it’s OK, they won’t allow marijuana businesses in unincorporated areas. Then the elected county executive, Pat McCarthy, vetoed that decision.  As the News Tribune reported:
McCarthy said the council can’t stop the state from issuing licenses so it should focus on zoning where marijuana businesses should go.

Why am I stuck in Summer? Because I HATE winter. A set of circumstances contrrolled my move here and those changed long ago....but I am still here. If you would like to let me in on a property localy which has good access but lots of privacy then write me. It's a great time to move. Caifornia is not longer an option as it may soon be another ocuntry and I only speak English, French and German.

Non-Hispanic whites are now a minority in California, according to new census data.

A jump in Hispanic births and Asian immigration propelled whites into minority status for the first time since 1860, when accurate census data started being recorded. As recently as 1970, non-Hispanic whites accounted for nearly 80 percent of the state's population.

Hispanics accounted for more than three-quarters of the state's growth during the 1990s and now account for nearly one in three residents. Non-Hispanic whites slipped to 47 percent of the state's population.

Asotin County may join the small list of counties and cities that have enacted moratoriums to ban marijuana, even though 56 percent of Washington State's voters last year approved Initiative 502. That initiative made it legal to use marijuana recreationally in the state. Locally, 51 percent of Asotin County's voters (5,027) voted no, while 49 percent voted yes (4,829) on the initiative.

On its agenda Monday night, the Asotin County Board of County Commissioners will consider a resolution declaring a moratorium that prohibits the production, processing, packaging, and retail sale of recreational marijuana and prohibiting granting of any county license or permit related to such activity. According to county officials, the item is not open for public comment, although there are two, 10-minute periods available for the public to comment on agenda items.Mikhail Carpenter with WSLCB Communications says having a governmental agency pass a moratorium such as this is not uncommon, but I-502 does not allow cities and counties to opt out. "It will likely end up in a legal battle of some sort," he says, adding that the law requires that the public have reasonable access to marijuana in an attempt to eliminate the black market.
If Auction on board goes well...trestle gets rails and bedding....killer deal
