When I heard how cold it was going to be this early in the year, two things came to me.....Siberia and a warm nice December. I brought up this map depicting what should happen in the next few days. Cold air from 10 degrees latitude meaning the stuff on the coldest top of the world,, will be filtering south. First it will hit the Dakotas and Montana/ Wyoming. Then it will sneak west thru the panhandle of a Idaho, finally settling in here in Eastern Washington.
Significant is the length of the cold weather, the time of year and the records which may fall. Secondarily there will be a demand for electricity from those who use it for heating. If your electric goes out, the best insulation in the west will not help.
PREPARE like you would any power outage but add in the cold factor. Don't use propane burning heaters in your house. It will kill you. Pay attention to the Red Cross who will have the most update information.

A recent federal inspection has concluded that Oroville Dam, the tallest dam in the nation, needs a comprehensive earthquake safety assessment.

The dam on the Feather River is the primary storage facility for the State Water Project, the state-owned plumbing system that provides drinking water to more than 23million people across California. Failure of the dam could inundate not only the city of Oroville but numerous other communities downstream, including Yuba City, Marysville and even West Sacramento.

The inspection was conducted in 2010 by consultants working for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees hydroelectric dams in the United States. It is the most recent inspection of its kind, which are conducted every five years.

No significant flaws were found in the dam itself. Inspectors recommended the earthquake safety assessment based on newer information about earthquake hazards in the vicinity of the dam. A copy of the inspection was reviewed by The Bee following a Public Records Act request.

Officials at the California Department of Water Resources, which manages the dam, say they don’t plan to conduct the recommended review because they don’t think the expense is justified. But they may be compelled to do it by state or federal regulators who are still considering the recommendation.

Oroville Dam, at 742feet high, was completed in 1968 and is the tallest dam in the United States. It stores 3.5million acre-feet of water, or enough to serve 7 million average households for a year. In California, only Shasta Dam on the Sacramento River stores more water.

State water officials say the dam is sufficiently strong. “Even with today’s understanding of seismicity and ground motions, Oroville still would meet the criteria that would be set today,” said David Panec, chief of dam safety at the DWR’s operations and maintenance division. “The dam is essentially overbuilt.”

The Catholic Church has found itself “outmarketed” in its opposition to same-sex marriage contending with Hollywood and caricatured as homophobic, according to Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York.
The TV-savvy  Dolan has just ended a term as president of the National Council of Catholic Bishops, during which the bishops have been routed on gay marriage.  They were hostile to President Obama only to see him take a majority of the Catholic vote, and found their obsession with sexuality pointedly questioned by Pope Francis.
In a taped segment of “Meet the Press,” due to air Sunday, host David Gregory asks Dolan:
“Regardless of the church’s teachings, do you think this (marriage equality) is evolving in such a way that it’s ultimately going to be legal everywhere?”  Or, asked Gregory, might there be a “backlash” against same-sex marriage?
“I think I’d be a Pollyanna to say that there doesn’t seem to be kind of a stampede to do this. I regret that,” Dolan replied.

The little shack below is at Cheney Trading Company. It will be full of Christmas trees for a very short while. It doesn't take long for the Scouts to sell trees...they are selling live trees and such things can be pretty pricey at supermarkets.

This year we have a live tree. My son bought it from Safeway...its a rosemary tree which maybe doesntt smell like pine but it sure is life and its shaped like a Christmas tree...and beside...we like it..thanks Chris

My second oldest was in town for a couple of days with family. We had a family day yesterday and has always been the rule, Chris and I get to spend some quality time alone for a couple of hours the day before they leave. It was the usual as it is with a father and son. Along the way I grabbed this shot of the Columbia Plateau Trail....and said goodbye...It isn't often I get to spend time alone with the fella who diagnosed my Guillain Barre before the neurologists. It was actually he as his sister both in medicine. Now I'll wait till Easter till we can speak again. These days not any families have this kind of father son relationship. I'm thankful for what I have...

J.Foster Fanning

When I moved to the wilderness, John Foster had already been there 20 years and a bit longer for Blaine Lindgren and wife. John who also goes by Foster Fanning had some pictures hanging in the clinic. Those pics were framed and for sale. He is without a doubt, one of the premier photographers in Ferry and Okanaogan Highlands. Above is a grove of Aspen I believe..

"Late November aspen grove in the Okanogan Highlands seen here with a skiff of snow and a kiss of frost bringing out the natural black and white highlights of these high country trees. This is a landscape style image..." -Foster
