Damage at Haul Road - Fort Bragg, Ca - El Nino 1982
First, the good news: Old Haul Road in MacKerricher State Park is one of the few trails near Mendocino where you can ride right alongside the ocean waves, enjoying miles of coastal scenery. It’s a car-free, paved recreation trail, suitable for all kinds of riders and beach lovers. And as of 2008, the mid-trail Pudding Creek railroad trestle has been repaired and refashioned into a beautiful biking and pedestrian bridge, meaning that two sections of this trail have been linked in elegant fashion. Fort Bragg residents are rejoicing: No more riding on the highway.
Now the bad news: Old Haul Road, also called the Ten Mile Coastal Trail, has suffered serious storm damage over the years, and much of its north end is completely washed away, replaced by millions of grains of blowing sand. Park managers have been hoping for funds to repair or reroute it, but so far, they’re just hoping.

But that hasn’t stopped bikers from using Old Haul Road, a historic railroad grade built in 1915 for transporting redwood logs to the mill in Fort Bragg. Bicyclists arrive in great numbers every sunny day and share the trail with hikers, baby strollers, dogs on leashes, and even some equestrians. Everybody has a good time.

A 3.7-mile oceanside section from the western end of Ward Avenue south to the railroad trestle over Pudding Creek and into downtown Fort Bragg allows uninterrupted riding. For many years, this railroad trestle was closed off, but bikers and pedestrians cheered when state parks personnel managed to get the bridge fixed and reopened. It is now possible to ride all the way from MacKerricher State Park to Fort Bragg’s Glass Beach along the historic Georgia-Pacific timber hauling road.

A Long ago Summer by Ron Rattray

Oregon's weather is going to get worse as the weekend approaches and the western U.S. cold snap is followed by snow.
The National Weather Service forecasts significant snow in the south and east on Friday and some of the coldest temperatures in recent years in the northwest.
On Friday, southwestern Oregon cities are expected to see snowfall ranging from 3 to 6 inches and accumulating on roads.

Tomorrow is the 24th Anniversary of the massacre of 14 young women at l'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.
In Grand Forks, the Boundary Women's Resource Centre is holding a vigil, to commemorate the Montreal massacre, and to raise awareness regarding violence against women in general.
Program Manager Theresa Taylor says this year Canada is recognizing 16 consecutive days of awareness of violence against women..that started last month.
The vigil is at noon tomorrow at the Cenotaph in Grand Forks...then they'll go back to the resource centre for a short video.
