BREAKING
UPDATE 5 P.M.: Mark Heuett of Asotin said two cabins along the Snake River were destroyed by the Big Cougar Fire last night. Heuett traveled upriver today to help friends defend their cabin and to check on the cabin of another friends.
“Two cabins burned last night,” he said. “There seems to be a pretty good crew of firefighters there that showed up this morning, I think everything is under control as far as protecting the private cabins.”
ORIGINAL STORY: The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office has issued a Stage III evacuation for the area upstream of Captain John Creek on the Snake River because of the 30,000-acre Big Cougar Fire there.
A Stage III evacuation means danger is imminent and residents should leave immediately. The area between Captain John and China Garden Creek is sparsely populated but there are numerous cabins and a few ranches along the Idaho side of the Snake River in the northern end of Hells Canyon. Firefighters are working to protect the cabins from the blaze and to build fire lines on its eastern and northern flanks.
Helicopters are dipping water from the river. Fire officials and the sheriff’s office are asking for rafters and jet boaters to use caution around the water-dipping operations. The fire, which is moving north, is projected to reach Chimney Creek today.

The Big Cougar Fire burning between the Snake
River and Wapsilla Ridge has grown to 30,000 acres and continues to move
north. It is 0 percent contained. The Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office
issued a Stage III evacuation notice. The non-mandatory notice means
that danger is imminent and residents should leave immediately.
Planned Actions: Firefighting
conditions in the Highrange Fire remain extremely challenging because
of high temperatures, low humidities, steep ground, tight canyons and
homes in the area. Fuels are primarily grass, though today the fire will be moving into heavier timber. As conditions permit, crews will again focus on protecting structures in the Getta Creek area and line construction in both Getta Creek and Joseph Plains. Tenatively, the incident management team will host a public meeting in Whitebird at 7:00 pm at the local Whitebird High School.
Previous 24 hours: The fire doubled in size overnight. Fire activity was extreme in Getta Creek and firefighters focused on structure protection. Yesterday,
around noon the fire behavior became so erratic that fire crews had to
change tactics and move from structure protection to constructing fire
line. Helicopters
and retardant ships successfully protected the structures and
suppressed three spot fires that had crossed Getta Creek to the north.

Missing Dundee mom Jennifer Huston has been found dead, near a remote dirt road in Yamhill County, police said.
A property owner spotted her SUV Tuesday morning in a grove of trees near Southeast Gopher Valley Road, just off Highway 18. He alerted police around 10:30 p.m., who soon found Huston's body nearby, according to the Newberg-Dundee Police Department. They said there were no clues which indicated foul play, but this remains "an active death investigation."
An area resident told KGW a chainlink fence had been haphazardly moved and that's what led the property owner to finding Huston's SUV. That neighbor also reported noticing a strong odor.
After a tip from a viewer, KGW's Sky-8 helicopter spotted the SUV and aerial photos showed that the license plates matched that of Jennifer Huston's. It was unclear if anything was inside the vehicle.
Huston, 38, has been missing since the evening of Thursday, July 24. She left home to run errands and seemed a little stressed out, according to her husband, Kallen Huston.

By the slimmest of margins, North Dakota State is ranked No. 1 just
21 votes ahead of Eastern Washington University in the NCAA Football
Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll released Monday (Aug. 4). The
other major poll – The Sports Network Top 25 – is set to be released on
Aug. 8.
The Eagles, who won the 2010 FCS title, received 615 points and six
first-place votes in rankings. The Eagles finished third a year ago in
the final coaches poll after finishing 12-3 and advancing to the
semifinals of the FCS Playoffs for the second-straight season.
The three-time defending FCS champion Bison received 636 total votes
and were picked as the champions by 18 of the 26 coaches who submitted
ballots. North Dakota State, whose last playoff loss came in 2010 at the
hands of the Eagles in overtime, were a perfect 15-0 in the 2013
season.
Four Eastern opponents in the 2014 season are ranked in the top 25, including No. 5 Montana (Nov. 8), No. 14 Sam Houston State (Aug. 23), No. 19 Montana State (Sept. 20) and No. 25 Northern Arizona (Oct. 25).

Fire Mobilization Update for the
Snag Canyon Fire
State fire assistance has been mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan in support of local firefighters working to contain the Snag Canyon Fire, Kittitas County. Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources August 5, 2014, at 10:30 pm at the request of Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue.
The fire started at approximately 5:50 pm on August 2, 2014, caused by lightening. There are approximately 200 homes that have been evaluated. The fire is threatening homes and power grid infrastructure.
Mobilization specialists from the Fire Protection Bureau ordered four wildland task forces (consisting of 5 wildland engines and one water tender along with personnel) additional resources to supplement the resources already fighting the fire.
The State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at Camp Murray continues to be activated to Phase II, to coordinate state assistance for the Snag Canyon Fire. Personnel from the Office of the State Fire Marshal are on scene providing resource coordination and administrative oversight, with other personnel staffing the State EOC.
Under the State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan, the Fire Protection Bureau coordinates the initial dispatch and continued administrative oversight of resources and personnel for the duration of the incident. The Mobilization Plan is implemented to provide a process to quickly notify, assemble and deploy fire service personnel, equipment and other resources from around the state when fires, disasters or other events exceed the capacity of local jurisdictions.

In an important ruling in Texas, a federal judge held that the right to record police activity is a clearly established right protected by the First Amendment.
In a civil rights lawsuit, Antonio Buehler alleged that his constitutional rights were violated when he was arrested by the Austin Police Department multiple times for taking pictures of police activities. Buehler was first arrested when he came upon a police scene at a gas station, where he began recording the arrest because he felt that excessive force was being used. After that arrest, he formed a group called the “Peaceful Streets Project” and began regularly documenting police activity. He was arrested again and again for documenting police activity, according to the lawsuit.

Weeds are pretty too.
GRASSHOPPER
FESTIVAL: Republic, home of the world famous Grasshopper Festival !!!
This could be a "unique" theme for Ferry County.
This idea began with comments about it being a big grasshopper year: decimating gardens and yards, needing chickens and “duck patrols” to eat the grasshoppers (like the Goat Patrol to eat down the weeds as wildfire prevention), more birdhouses (birding, that could become part of the Grasshopper Festival theme--I’d like to get Wildfires in there, but that might be bad luck.), paying kids a nickel apiece to de-grasshopper one’s yard, cats like ‘em, too.

And then there’s the high-in-protein foodie fun: chocolate-covered, an
old stand-by; Sikander calls them “land shrimp” (love that!); Crystal
will of course beer batter fry them; we’ve got the stir-fry, rice, Asian
theme; the “crunch”; all kinds of possibilities with the legs, a
high-end specialty like saffron threads; a more politically correct term
for Ferry County’s “bush meat” (again, land shrimp?) “when in season”;
exclusively grass-fed, rhubarb-fed, whatever, organic, locally grown,
“healthy choices”; BBQ & dipping sauces, marinades, condiments,
desserts, protein bars, snack mixes; a mandatory grasshopper cook-off
competition; new job market for hopper wranglers, no bag limits....
Hey everybody, we can truly create a unique tourist destination theme with this one! Ideas anybody? Who's on board? I am!
