Y
Bacterial Hoof Disease in
Southwest Washington Elk
Over the past decade, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has received a growing number of reports of elk hobbled by missing or misshapen hooves in southwest Washington. This is a major concern for hunters, area residents and state wildlife managers alike. Analysis of tissue from deformed hooves indicates the condition is likely caused by a bacterial disease similar to one found in livestock.
Since 2008, the disease has spread from the Cowlitz River Basin to Pacific, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Clark and Wahkiakum counties, affecting the St. Helens and Willapa Hills elk herds. Scientists believe the bacteria are transmitted through the wet soil of lowland areas.

California Wildfires: Thousands of Firefighters Work Against Stubborn Flames (PHOTOS)

Hot, dry weather fanned the flames of several large fires across California this week. While crews appeared to have success taming the Courtney Fire and Bolles Fire, the vicious King Fire continued to grow outside Sacramento.

By Saturday, the King Fire had grown to more than 80,000 acres and was threatening as many as 12,000 homes, according to CalFire. The agency said more than 3,800 fire personnel were part of the fight.

The fires come at what's traditionally seen as the peak of the state's wildfire season, but it's been a painful year already. USA Today reports more than 4,800 fires sprang to life in California so far in 2014 – 1,000 more than an average fire season.

Hundreds, if not thousands of families have been impacted, and the photos above barely scratch the surface of the high cost of wildfires.

An estimated 60 people who live in the Nelson B.C. community, are homeless.
That according to a recent presentation to city council from Pastor Jim Reimer from the Kootenay Christian Fellowship who is advocating for a permanent campground.

While no immediate decision was made to support the project Councillor Donna MacDonald believes its worth looking into.

Reimer asked the city to contribute to a feasibility study which would look into into levels of supervision, management  and water and sewer services.

WASHINGTON - It's time for flu vaccine again and while it's important for the whole family, this year health officials have some different advice for different ages: Certain kids should opt for the ouchless nasal spray. Seniors, expect to get a new kind of pneumonia shot along with that flu jab.
And too many young and middle-age adults are skipping the vaccine altogether, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - even though there are more options than ever.
"The best way to protect yourself against the flu is to get a flu vaccination," said CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden on Thursday, before rolling up his sleeve to get his own flu shot.
Some things to know about flu vaccinations:

Your doctor will poopoo the Guillain Barre but I run a large group of GBS Survivors...yes survivors
because 5 percent die. Many of the rest have neurological problems for the rest of their life. I spent 40 days in ICU and another 4 months in rest homes and such. I would wish Guillain Barre on nobody. Your odds are 1 in 100,000. Don't take chances with you life. I went code blue 2 times. I bled out. All of my blood went into my abdomen and testicles. Sure they tell you and if you catch it soon, no problem? Wrong. My survivors group and some doctors believe your odds are more like 1 in 50,000.

A silent killer has been affecting our food system: The decline of pollinators. According to most available research, bees and other pollinator animals are disappearing due to a complex variety of factors including Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), a global bee epidemic first identified in 2006. The cause is somewhat unclear, but experts have cited varroa mites, malnutrition, pesticides — including a new class called neonicotinoids--and even cellphones as possible causes.
If the problem persists, our food supply could be in serious jeopardy. Bees (both the honey and native varieties) pollinate seventy out of the top 100 human food crops, which supply nearly 90 percent of the world’s meals. In fact, the Apis mellifera (aka the Western honeybee) is responsible for 1 in every 3 mouthfuls we eat.

[MENDOCINO, CA]  On Monday, September 15, 2014, in a crass marketing exercise, —shoddily enveloped in deniability— Urban Outfitters made available on their website, a sweatshirt, with a Kent State University insignia, appearing to be tattered and blood spattered.  The launch of this item cut deep with many, triggering painful thoughts of contemporary school shootings, ugly reflections of the current state of police violence in communities, and worse yet, it seemed to relegate the memory of the Kent State University protestors who were brutally murdered by the national guard into a frame of hipster irony.  Pushback was inevitable —a petition was quickly created, media was quick to indict UO on the move, and shortly thereafter the company issued a half-cocked apology.

Tomorrow 1st Day of Fall

The North Central Washington Narcotics Task Force, DEA, ATF, HSI, US Border Patrol, Republic Police Department, Okanogan County Sheriff's Office and the Ferry County Sheriff's Office conducted a series of search warrants and arrests on multiple drug and firearms dealers in Ferry and Okanogan Counties. A search warrant was issued for a property near Republic after a series of controlled buys in the Republic area. Drugs, Multiple Firearms and several articles of stolen property have already been recovered and officers will continue to stay on scene until the property is fully processed. If you live in the Republic area and have been the victim of a theft, make sure that it has been reported to the Sheriff's Office. Please be patient as the identification and return of stolen property can take some time. -RPM

Well finally on the fourth day here I got lucky, and the title explains why. Jane Magen wrote me an Email and wished me luck. Up at 4:00 AM jumped in the truck and drove an hour and a half to the Lamar Valley. In all I saw three grizzlies in the valley and one Wolf. When I got home and told Lucy, as she stayed behind to rest was she ever mad, whoops maybe I should have told her I saw nothing. Anyway Thanks Jane you helped immensely.

Notice something on this map, which I have seen before:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/
Widen the map, and you will see magnitude 5 earthquakes in Iceland and in southern Mexico.

On a globe draw a straight line between these, and it crosses the East Coast of the US, and behold, a small earthquake in the middle of the Georgia/South Carolina border.

Currently this past week there has been a swarm of small earthquakes just north of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea.

There is an active volcano in this area.
