Here on the 49th parallel as that late season
sun approaches the winter solstice of 2013 it sits low in the southern
sky. Caught fleeting glimpses of Old Sol today as the cold mountain
mists lifted off the steep, forested slopes. Were a long ways off the 16
hour daylight days of mid June.

An unusual late fall wildfire fueled by drought conditions destroyed 15 homes and forced about 100 people to flee the forested mountains of the scenic Big Sur region overlooking the Pacific.
The slow-moving fire in Los Padres National Forest near state Highway 1 had consumed about 550 acres and was only 5 percent contained, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Lynn Olson said. Additional firefighters were brought in, bringing the total force to nearly 500.
Big Sur — miles of rugged coast, cliffs and wilderness — is a popular tourist destination about 150 miles south of San Francisco with high-end resorts and beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.
The fire was burning a little more than a mile from Ventana Inn and Spa, a favorite spot among celebrities where former Facebook president and Napster co-founder Sean Parker got married in June.
In the summer of 2008, a lightning-sparked wildfire forced the evacuation of Big Sur and blackened 250 square miles before it was contained. That blaze burned more than a dozen homes.
California's fire season traditionally peaks by mid-fall but the drought of the last several years has given the state essentially year-round danger.
I fixed the above better than last time...and Kathy Meader took this. She also jumped a one way bungee from that tall needle looking building. I posted lots of video so no more....
A state wildlife specialist has killed a mountain lion near Oral
Zumwalt Way, possibly resolving several months of cougar sightings in
the hills along Missoula’s southern fringe.
Fish, Wildlife and Parks lion specialist Bob Wiesner said the lion was an 18-month-old subadult male weighing about 110 pounds. He was following up on a homeowner’s sighting on Saturday morning and found where the lion had killed a mule deer fawn near some houses in the Miller Creek neighborhood. He was able to track and kill the lion later that day.

This is right by the Rail Trail bike trail combo. The bike trail is onto cement highway for a few miles before rejoining...cement that is...paved bike to Fish Lake only. Otherwise you run right into this train which is sitting here. They always seem to stop here for a bit....never asked why.
Why is marijuana associated with schizophrenia?
That’s what researchers are trying to figure out, and there have been three key studies, recently published, that point in two different directions, which is why I chose to start this story as I did. Rather than blast out headlines that contribute to the whipsaw, head-jerking of “Yes it does!” and “No it doesn’t!” let’s start with what none of this research does.
None of the research on cannabis and schizophrenia establishes or disproves a causal link. No research has proven that ingestion of the chemicals in marijuana causes physical damage that results in clinical psychosis (as opposed to just thinking someone is stupid or nuts).
What two of the research articles I’ll bring up do establish is a correlation between marijuana use and the presence of brain structure anomalies found in people with schizophrenia. The third research finding establishes that there is no strong correlation between cannabis use and schizophrenia.
We reported on that last one a week ago: Harvard study: Marijuana not linked to schizophrenia.
Here’s the conclusion from the study:

Here’s the conclusion from the study:
There was no significant difference in morbid risk for schizophrenia between relatives of the patients who use or do not use cannabis. … The results of the current study suggest that having an increased familial morbid risk for schizophrenia may be the underlying basis for schizophrenia in cannabis users and not cannabis use by itself. This Harvard study is a data study. The researchers collected already published data from wide sources, crunched the numbers and found that there was a much stronger correlation between family dynamics and schizophrenia than a correlation between pot and this psychosis.
On days like today when it is low 30's at best ad the air is full of fog and mist which is almost thick enough to call rain or snow...I have few choices. I either stay at home and heal after 5-6 days of heavy workout, or I go over to my sister in laws place...but there is no place to keep the batteries warm. Sitting out they will naturally draw down in voltage and the wheelchair will get soggy OR I could go out and shop...but that costs money I don't have (never-mind that not one person has donated to this for a year now. I still do it free and am still getting lowered food stamps. I'm not sure of what my excuse would be were it me... I would cough up a few bucks to keep it going. Been doing this since 1992 for free...times are tough and my only absence was when I was in ICU and various forms of paralyzed. Even after coming home I picked it right back up. Ive been here for the communities small as they are...at very least write and let me know your there. I see hundreds of hits every day...I see you...
