I remind our readers that Cheney's, and our, Kathy Meader will be photographing New Zealand for us in the next few weeks. There is much in New Zealand that is quite different and yet in some cities all looks quite like America. I am excited at the prospect of learning what things we share and those many cultural things that are different. Coming soon. Her picture above is not New Zealand but Spokane County.

The Black Forest wildfire this June was one of the most destructive in Colorado history, in terms of homes lost. It started close to houses and quickly spread through the ponderosa pine canopies on the rolling hills near Colorado Springs. The wildfire destroyed 500 homes in the first 48 hours and killed two people.

Hot, dry and windy weather played a role in that wildfire, said Don Smurthwaite, spokesperson with the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho.

"Fire seasons are getting longer, western regions are getting drier, and more people are living closer to fire-prone areas."

Fire scientists have observed those conditions becoming more prevalent across the United States.

I took this picture of a young checker named Mary who exemplifies what is right in the American workforce. She never misses a day. She always has a big smile as she always recognizes you by name. And when you leave, she gives you a bigger smile when she says to have a very nice day. So many say it in the course of a day, but there is something about Marys voice that gives you a feeling sh really means it. She doesn't leave until October. We will miss her.

Scientists Disclose Plans To Make Superflu In Labs

Who do these guys think they are, the Dr. Frankensteins of virology?
First, two teams of virologists more dangerous versions of the deadly H5N1 flu. Now they want to give the H7N9 virus, which has already sickened at least 134 people and killed 43 people in Asia, a few new capabilities: drug resistance, faster transmission between people and the ability to sneak past the immune system.
Flu researchers Ron Fouchier, of the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, and Yoshihiro Kawaoka, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, wrote up a whole list of risky experiments they're starting with the new H7N9 bird flu and then published their plans Wednesday in both and . About 20 other scientists also signed the letters.
