FIRE RUMORS
The rumours raced across these woodland communities faster than the fire: the Groveland firehouse had burned down; authorities were cutting power lines to force people to evacuate; police had arrested an arsonist who started it; the sequoias were going up in smoke.
None of it was true but the speed and reach of social media, especially Facebook, convinced many otherwise, compounding alarm amid one of the biggest wildfires in California's history.
"Social media is a wonderful tool but I've seen here it's not always our friend," James Mele, the sheriff-coroner of Toulumne county, told hundreds of residents at a town hall-style meeting on Monday night.
CELEBRATE
RECOVERY meets at the Nazarene Church on Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00 PM. CR
is a faith-based 12-step program that includes 8 recovery principles
that mesh with the 12 steps. We are a close-knit group that forms
relationships as we encourage and support each other through the
recovery/sobriety process. We will be starting over again with Step 1 on
Tuesday, August 27, so if you are thinking about joining, this would be
a good time to start. CR is also recognized as a valid group for your
legal meeting requirements. For more information call the church at
775-3213 and leave a message.
So
I booked Billy Stoops and Leanne Trevalyan (from Junkyard Jane) to come
and perform in Republic on Sept. 27th as a duet. The only problem was I
wasn't sure where I was going to put them, or what I was going to do
with them. Well, I got it all figured out. I am going to make a
fundraiser out of them! I want to raise money to buy our school's music
program new guitars and other music equipment. I feel that Republic will
really appreciate having Billy & Leanne performing in our little
mountain town and with donations at the door, an auction and a bake
sale, I can raise some serious money. I am working on getting sponsors
now to cover costs, so ALL money raised will go straight to the cause. I
am doing this all on my own so any donations and help would be
appreciated! I need Bake Sale items and Auction items! The fundraiser
will be held at The Republic Brewing Company on Friday, Sept 27th. Not
sure what time yet. Watch for a poster soon!!

Denver museum closes Indian massacre displayColorado's new state history museum has closed an exhibit on the Sand
Creek Indian massacre, one of the state's darkest chapters, after
descendants of the slaughter's survivors demanded changes in how it is
portrayed and complained that they weren't consulted about the display.
The Burrowing Owl is a specialist of the open plains. Flat stretches of
lightly grazed short grass prairie, undisturbed by human activity and
unpolluted by pesticide residue are necessary for this gregarious owl's
success. It can be spotted in daylight standing on a mound near its nest
entrance or on a fence post as it prepares for an evening hunt.

View of the Rim Fire by AutoVideoCam
The biggest news in the west is the Rim Fire. Although some progress has been made, it could go badly very quickly. Meanwhile a whole camp owned by the city of Berkeley was destroyed. It has been there since 1920. A vigil was done last night in Berkeley and hundreds showed up. So look for that to be the story for the next few days. The state of our country is coming tonot just one but several crossroads. I gound out during the last power outage that I wasnt prepared and I am one who wrote a book about survivial in the wilderneess think I had better go back and read my book.
