"To her friends, which numbered in the hundreds, she simply Carol. Carole was in failing health and required dialysis numerous times a week. She and her husband Dennis resided quietly in Cheney. The only times I saw them were when Dennis took Carol to the Hospital or when Dennis was BBQ-ing near their comfortable home.
Carol was receiving her treatment last Thursday afternoon. She took the time to nap, with exception. This time she never awoke. Her body weary of pain, yet having a big smile for everyone, decided it was time to leave on that same journey we all face. She will be widely remembered in the SCOPE community and it's ultimate leader, the Sheriff of Spokane County. And as with most, her day of memorial will be marked by normalcy. Life goes on for the majority at any given time. I wonder though if even some who did not know her, will be remembered as a friendly smell, a touch or an unseen smile. Farewell Carol. The Beauty of Oregons Coast
My daughter PJ, her husband Brandon and three of our grandchildren have been spending a few days in one of my favorite places.....Newport, Oregon. I visited there many times in 1962. I even slept on the beach. I made it a mental note to not let my life fly by without showing, my wife, should I marry. One wife a 7 children later, I find the Bowens love it. As for me, it became a bit touristy. Then, as I grew in geology education, I studied the Cascadian Subduction Zone. It would appear that the USGS is actually placing odds of a 9Mw earthquake in a subduction zone near here. I even went so far as to write up a hypothesis on it. The area is ripe and a quake of that magnitude would do quite a bit of serious damage.....so I'm torn...sort of like Harry near St Helens...now buried under its debris. I'm open however. All things are possible. Oh! The kids are learning photography. I'm mot sure unless Brandon says otherwise, the picture is taken by him. Good eye!

The flu is here and I have it from a professional that many are checking into the hospital with flu even though they have had the flu shot. We are due for a new strain or one which looks like the old one but is different enough to grab a person who has had the jab.

EVERETT — Health officials say Washington’s flu season has begun and this year the dominant strain is H1N1, otherwise known as swine flu.
There is some good news: the H1N1 strain is part of the current vaccine. So unlike the swine flu epidemic in 2009, people can protect themselves this year.
Swine flu is more likely to hit young adults and children than people over 65. Since doctors are not required to report flu cases to the state, officers of the Snohomish County health district say they don’t have complete data on the number of flu cases. But at least 12 people have been hospitalized in Snohomish County with the illness.
“The season appears to be in full swing now, and it does appear to be predominantly the H1N1 strain,” Dr. Gary Goldbaum, health officer and director of the Snohomish Health District, told The Daily Herald.

The house or dwelling above was lived in by Jerry Schmidt. Jerry worked in Alaska and came back to Washington for a visit. During that vacation he fell off of a motorcycle and hit his head. He was in ICU unconscious for 6 months. He awoke. And he was still Jerry but somewhere in his coma he adopted the memories of a Viet Nam Veteran. He wasn't deceiving anyone but he did have one of the most remarkable memories of where he was in Nam, and various battlefield actions he took. He also had a good working knowledge of every weapon used in Nam, every chopper, how it sounded, every weapon and same. He was better than a map of Viet. He had a 100 percent memory of every place in which he combated.
In the Washington bile accident he acquired some blood during transfusion and he contracted hepatitis C from it. During his 10 years living in a plastic tent he picked up a nasty drinking habit which wasn't good for his liver. Jerry passed away just before I was done doing a documentary on him. He parents came up for the first time in years and took anything of value, leaving a country mess. Too bad. It wasn't Jerry's way.
