Beyond Guillain barre recovery, I suffer from bipolar and have since 1979. This morn I read the umpteenth article on depression by a
Therese Borchard
"I wish people knew that depression comes and it goes, and in its ebb and flow are found pockets of peace that can sustain a person for the journey.
I wish people knew, more than anything else, that there is hope.
Beyond medication and meditation.
Beyond fish oil and vitamin D.
Beyond acupuncture and yoga.
Beyond mindfulness and biofeedback.
Beyond cognitive behavioral therapy and brain stimulation technology.
Beyond every action imaginable, there is hope for depression.
In reaching beyond the self to others who understand the instinct to sneeze.
In sharing the familiar yet unique story of one’s illness."
In finding a purpose to live for.
In attaching every piece of the heart and soul to some meaning in this world.
In gently turning the pain and the bitterness to love and service.

Linda Salamone This is an amazing post. TY ^y^
Melissa Rose Yes there is hope & what you say is quite accurate indeed! But sadly for all of us (those who suffer & those who love those who suffer) too many of us still do not understand that finding that thing to live for can be outside of the persons grasp at times & also: not only is it ok to ask someone if they are feeling blue or if they feel like hurting themselves, that it is essential to open those lines of communication in a safe way to help those who suffer & to keep them safe in their darkest moments... all of these things & more are essential to coping; to loving; to living with depression.
Bob Shannon Melissa Rose look at the last sentence. I am now quite like that and it doesn't remove the depression but it moderates it considerably? Why? Because I was totally paralyzed for 40 days in ICU. Because I spent almost half a year in the hospital after that. After that, what is left but compassion.
You and your husband went through a trauma not unlike GBS in some ways although it us unfortunately much more common. I don't know what orthopedic things were done nor still could be done.
In GBS, no matter what a neurologist says, they know very little, except Madeleine Geraghty and she's a stroke doctor. Today so little is known about what I had, whether or not it could return (odds extremely low) or turn into a more chronic form with a poorer outcome. The odds of contracting GBS vary with 1-150,000 being mean. Come on. Scratch tickets give me better odds yet I've not won, with exception.
Together is better than apart. You and husband help each other synergistically. My wife has post polio. We help each other. Jane and I try to funnel depression into helping others. We do it every day for a big part of the day. And God willing...we'll be at it tomorrow. Pain and recovery funneled into love for those we don't know trumps depression.
Linda Salamone I believe two important things can help cope with depression. First as difficult as it is, trying to talk about how you are feeling. Second trying to identify the cause of the flare up. I know neither of these are easy to do, but I firmly believe both of these things help lessen the depression and helps ward of total despair.
Joan Youdell Kisska Everyday starts a new beginning of the rest of our lives. I wish you Peace and Comfort, Bob. Your life and your dedication is an inspiration to all of us.
Melissa Rose Linda Salamone often there is not identifiable cause of a flare up of depression or bi polar or any mental illness. That is quite often the nature of the beast. In some cases you can find a trigger for an episode such as a sudden job loss unexpected death(such as of a young spouse of of a child for two awful examples) but brain chemistry is such in any mental illness it really cannot b e compared to finding the cause of a flare up of arthritis, COPD etc or other chronic medical ills.
Bob Shannon My purpose in writing #1 was to let some GBS clients speak. I absolutely not want this to be a negative discussion in any way. Knowing all parties involved, I can see that possibility. Please be respectful of others. There are many here who have or are recovery ing from GBS. Please stick to that field. I never give a warning when I am about to file and move a series to my secret GBS group. Let us close discussion.

Even as the height of summer leaves, my garden is full of color and flowers. It came to me that this may well be an Indian Summer. Yes I said Indian and I say Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins and
every team you can imagine by their proper names. I too am part Indian. My roots go back to Nantucket. of my Quaker Grandfathers owned it......and cousin Ben Franklin helped make it so.. It isn't records but I am Son of the American Revolution and after reading my great grandfathers last letter to his wife, I am a son of the Union in the Civil War. America is my home and the men call our forefathers are my relatives and truly my forefathers....Oh that Indian. Chief
John Hyanno, after whom hyannis port was named. Mom got me going on this knowing what would happen. Exciting it was...Thye are gone. We are now AMERICA!!
