Drought Worsens China's Long-Term Water Crisis

After a season of record-breaking drought across China, groundwater levels have hit historic lows this year in northeast and central parts of China where hundreds of millions of people live. Reservoirs grew so dry in agricultural Henan province that the city of Pingdingshan closed car washes and extracted water from puddles. But this is no one-time emergency. Farmers and water-hungry industries have been wrestling with a long-term water crisis that has dried up more than half the country's 50,000 significant rivers and left hundreds of cities facing what the government classifies as a "serious scarcity" of water.

Like unraveling octopus tentacles, the influence of California’s years-long drought seems to wriggle through the state in search of new avenues to affect, and this time, it’s electricity.
The less rain, the less hydroelectric energy the state can produce, says a new report released on Monday by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Sure enough, with California’s reservoirs at 52 percent of their historic average for this time of year, power coming from hydroelectric dams has been cut in half.
California typically gets about 20 percent of its power from hydroelectric plants, but that number is at a 10-year low, with dams producing only about 10 percent of the state’s power this year. That’s left an energy gap for natural gas-fueled power plants to fill—and they have. Though natural gas is considered less of a bane to the climate than coal because it produces less carbon dioxide when burned, it is itself a greenhouse gas—and more potent than CO2, although shorter-lived in the atmosphere.

CHICAGO, IL
The national Class III milk cash base price of $24.60 per hundred on milk shipped in September pushed the stretch of record high prices to nine consecutive months. This was an increase of $2.35 per hundred from August and of $6.46 per hundred from September of 2013.
For the first nine months of 2014, the Class III cash price has averaged $22.72 per hundred. But the record high run of monthly prices is likely to be over by the end of this year.
The prospects look good for another record high in October, given the existing record high of $21.02 per hundred set in 2012 and the Class III futures trading price of $23.88 per hundred at midday on Wednesday of this week.

At least a dozen communities in Northern and Central California are at risk of running out of water in just 60 days.
The areas in jeopardy include Colusa and El Dorado County. These are relatively small communities and they rely on one source of water.
Butte County north of Sacramento is getting hit hard.
At Big Bend Mobile Home Park near Oroville, home to more than 30 families , the water supply is so low that between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., it is completely shut off.
“Hard when you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night,” said resident Michelle Payne. “I guess we’re not flushing.”
The only water source for her entire community is a single well. There are other wells on the property, but they have all run dry.
“There’s really nothing can you about it,” said resident John Dougherty. “I don’t water any plants… try to cut back on toilet usage… whatever we can do is what you gotta do…all we can do.”

Health officials are investigating the death of a Lewiston boy who tested positive for a flu-like virus.
It is too early to tell if the toddler died of complications related to enterovirus D68, a potent strain of the respiratory virus that has become prevalent across the U.S. in recent months and is suspected in the death of a New Jersey child last month.

The United States is currently engulfed in one of the worst droughts in recent memory. More than 30% of the country experienced at least moderate drought as of last week’s data.
In seven states drought conditions were so severe that each had more than half of its land area in severe drought. Severe drought is characterized by crop loss, frequent water shortages, and mandatory water use restrictions. Based on data from the U.S. Drought Monitor, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the states with the highest levels of severe drought.
In an interview, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) meteorologist Brad Rippey, told 24/7 Wall St. that drought has been a long-running issue in parts of the country. “This drought has dragged on for three and a half years in some areas, particularly [in] North Texas,” Rippey said.
