NO CHARGES AGAINST OFFICER WILSON

A grand jury has reached a decision on whether or not to indict the white Ferguson police officer who killed an unarmed black teenager in August, and officials plan to announce the result at 8 p.m.

At stake is the fate of Officer Darren Wilson, 28, and whether he will face state charges in the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. But more broadly, the community — and the nation — are also bracing for the potential unrest that could follow the announcement.

"After a long day of photographing whales at sea, I was looking forward to relaxing in the evening, but Lady aurora invited me out, and I could not resist," says Salomonsen. "After quickly getting new batteries and memory cards for my camera, I went out hunting, this time for the magic emerald light. The entire sky was filled with majestic moving green auroras. At times there were 4 to 5 arcs stretching from east to west next to each other in the sky. This was really amazing to watch!"

A trio of storms this week gave Northern California communities an inch or more of rain. The weather also brought welcome relief from the state’s long dry spell, but – no surprise – the drought is by no means over.
Despite a week of weepy skies and gray clouds, precipitation so far this season has been below average across California. In the northern Sierra Nevada, where the snowpack is a crucial water supply, precipitation as of Friday morning was about two-thirds of average for the period since Oct. 1. In Sacramento, rainfall is about 50 percent of average since July 1.
Even so, those numbers are an improvement over the same period last year, which says a lot about the severity of this drought, which is in its third year.
