Willamette National Forest supervisor Meg Mitchell is encouraging people to stay home this weekend and avoid traveling in the forest east of Salem and Eugene.
"The Weather Service has briefed us that they are predicting 8-12 inches of rain between Saturday and Sunday evening, as well as winds up to 50 mph on ridges," Mitchell said in a statement issued by her staff. "Rivers and streams will rise and there is potential for flooding, and road washouts or failures. Please stay home and reduce your risk of exposure to not just the poor weather, but also to becoming stranded on roads."

Kurdish forces in northern Iraq celebrated their biggest victory yet over ISIS on Friday after breaking, with U.S. air support, the lengthy jihadi siege of Mount Sinjar and freeing hundreds of trapped members of the Yazidi religious sect.
The Kurds claimed at least 100 Islamic militants were killed in the two-day battle to lift the siege. The victory by about 8,000 Peshmerga fighters will boost the Kurds’ confidence in their efforts to roll back the territorial gains made in northern Iraq by the fighters for the so-called Islamic State.

1.22°F: Average number of degrees by which the global temperature exceeded the 20th-century average. That makes 2014 to date the warmest period since scientists started keeping track, breaking by 0.02°F the previous record, set in 2010.
40 percent: Decline in the price of a barrel of oil from its 2014 peak this summer. Oil prices are now at their lowest levels in five and a half years due to slowing global demand and expanded alternative energy supplies. The Financial Times has called the price decline "by far the biggest shock for the global economy this year," noting that its effects could "throw sand into the works of the usual economic relationships."

Two policemen dead in New York City. We talked about this yesterday to some length. It's almost Christmas and I don't know how young or the fellas are but certainly they have a family somewhere and now there's families without a husband or father for Christmas. These kind of things are probably daily in New York but this particular one made the headlines. They were shot gangland style when They received one shot each in the head. The perpetrator then ran off and killed himself by shooting himself in the head. How long is this going to go on? It simply makes me sick to think about this. My wife told me just now this is the second year in a row we haven't given money to the Salvation Army so I'm going to get out my checkbook and make a check to the Salvation Army in honor of those two men. I realize the families don't receive it but poor people do and in my head I'm thinking it's for the two dead policemen. It's all symbolic. God rest their souls and watch over the families.
When you rose from the dead, Lord Jesus, you formed the Church into your new body, and made of it the new Jerusalem, united in your Spirit. Give us peace in our day. Make all nations come to your Church to share in the gifts in fellowship, that they may render you thanks without end and come to your eternal city.
Prayer works. If you believe in peace then pray for it together. Church is a wonderful way to meet your neighbors. If we were not housebound our church would be Rose of Lima. Whatever church you would attend, don't just talk it, but do it as well.
Every December, a giant Christmas tree decorates St. Peter's Square.
For years, only Italian regions gave it to the Vatican as a gift. But in 2008 this spruce came all the way from Piesting Valley, in Austria. It was 109 feet tall and had 120 years.
After Austria, it was the turn of Belgium. In 2009, this fir of 89 feet and 6 tons came from the town of Spa.
Italy also gave a spruce in 2010. More than 3,000 golden spheres were needed to decorate it.
Benedict XVI
December, 2010
"The tree will stay by the Nativity Scene until after Christmas, to be admired by many pilgrims and tourists from around the world. It is a significant symbol of the light that Christ, by his birth, has given Humanity."
Ukraine also donated a Christmas tree to the Vatican. It was the year 2011, and it had traveled roughly 900 miles from the town Zakarpattia.
Several representatives of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church were present at the tree lighting ceremony.
The same year Pope emeritus Benedict XVI resigned this Christmas tree arrived from his native Bavaria, in Germany. With 100 feet of height, it was one of tallest ever installed at St. Peter's Square.
The Vatican has an official Christmas Tree since 1982. Italy is the country that has donated the Vatican a Christmas Tree.
