The number of students falling sick from the Flu in the Spokane Public Schools is higher than usual. Four schools in the district have reported at least 10 percent of students with the flu. Some schools are as high as 20 percent or one in five students.

Teachers at Garfield Elementary said they want to be extra careful right now because so many students have already caught the flu across the district. Thursday afternoon students at Garfield washed their hands after coming back into the classroom. "We always encourage you know proper washing, proper hand hygiene," said Laurie Moyer of Spokane Public Schools.

Washington lawmakers are considering Senate Bill 5052, which would regulate medical marijuana the same way recreational pot is regulated, something medical marijuana users have feared since recreational marijuana was legalized.
The bill essentially would put the Washington State Liquor Control Board in charge of regulating medical marijuana and has received wide support from legislators. Medical marijuana users – and local dispensaries – are not thrilled with the prospect of these changes if the bill is passed into law. Darren McCrea, owner of Spocannibis, would rather legislators not get involved in regulating medical marijuana and “just leave it the way it is."

Saint Mary's a Catholic College and Gonzaga, another Catholic College have fought some epic basketball battles in recent years. And for 25 minutes Thursday night, it appeared this might be another. But Gonzaga's defense clamped down and the No. 3 Bulldogs went on a 22-2 run to blow open a close game and cruise to a 68-47 victory that gave them sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference.

The Nelson Police Department is exploring the use of personal body cameras..Holland says the notion of body cameras is a great idea, however they come
with a cost, and what might be beneficial in a larger community might not fit with a small town. If police body cameras do become mandated Holland hopes the province takes a uniformed approach.

Residents in earthquake-prone areas, including certain zip codes in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Pasadena are eligible to receive up to $3,000 in state incentives to protect their homes against temblors, state officials said Thursday.

The Earthquake Brace and Bolt program, which is offered by the California Residential Mitigation Program, is also available to some residents of San Francisco, Oakland and San Leandro.

Homeowners have until Feb. 15 to apply for the benefit, which helps to pay for earthquake retrofits on pre-1979 homes that are not bolted to their foundations and have crawlspaces that have not been reinforced with braced cripple walls.

Homes that qualify also must be built on a level or low slope. Other requirements can be found at https://www.earthquakebracebolt.com/Homeowners.aspx.

The typical cost of such retrofits is between $2,000 to $10,000. There are enough funds in the program to offset costs for as many as 575 homeowners.
