After sitting out the opener because of injury, USC linebacker Morgan Breslin made his season debut Saturday night against Washington State.

And the senior made his presence felt in a game that was tied, 7-7, at halftime. Breslin, who had a team-best 13 sacks last season, sacked Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday for an eight-yard loss in the second quarter. On the next play, lineman George Uko sacked Halliday and forced a fumble that helped set up a touchdown for a 7-0 lead.
Breslin was injured early in training camp. He traveled to Hawaii with the team but was held out for precautionary reasons. On Saturday, he had two tackles by halftime.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- It won't take long for those around the nation to digest what Oregon did here Saturday. Just another display of speed, depth and dominance in an expected rout of Virginia.
But what might give a certain outfit from Tennessee indigestion, and the rest of the Pac-12 a case of the butterflies is how poorly Oregon played, yet still dominated in every sense of the imagination.
Oregon had 11 penalties for 119 yards, including six 15-yard infractions. Three drops by normally stellar tight end Colt Lyerla. One extra-point attempt was blocked. And there was a handful of missed tackles, including one that led to a 45-yard touchdown. Even their fourth-down mojo was off. The Ducks were 0-for-2 on fourth down, including being stonewalled at the one-yard line.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — As a gigantic wildfire in and around Yosemite National Park entered its fourth week Saturday, environmental scientists moved in to begin assessing the damage and protecting habitat and waterways before the fall rainy season.
Members of the federal Burned Area Emergency Response team were hiking the rugged Sierra Nevada terrain even as thousands of firefighters still were battling the blaze, now the third-largest wildfire in modern California history.

Federal officials have amassed a team of 50 scientists, more than twice what is usually deployed to assess wildfire damage. With so many people assigned to the job, they hope to have a preliminary report ready in two weeks so remediation can start before the first storms, Alex Janicki, the Stanislaus National Forest BAER response coordinator, said.Team members are working to identify areas at the highest risk for erosion into streams, the Tuolumne River and the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, San Francisco's famously pure water supply.

The wildfire started in the Stanislaus National Forest on Aug. 17 when a hunter's illegal fire swept out of control and has burned 394 square miles of timber, meadows and sensitive wildlife habitat.

It has cost more than $89 million to fight, and officials say it will cost tens of millions of dollars more to repair the environmental damage alone.

About 5 square miles of the burned area is in the watershed of the municipal reservoir serving 2.8 million people - the only one in a national park.

Rush Limbaugh says so many wrong things about Detroit the Detroit newspaper did a two page spread correcting all his mistakes. (For example, Rush says Detroit's first black mayor, Coleman Young, caused the 1967 riots, but Young was not elected Mayor until 1973.) Is it newsworthy, or even worth the trouble, to fact check Limbaugh, whose self selected audience is pre-determined to believe Detroit's problems are the fault of democrats and blacks anyway, and who when confronted with numerous fact errors defends himself with, "I'm not a journalist, I'm an entertainer"? -Vince Duffy

Trying to dispel a rumor that SR20 is washed out between Republic and Tonasket. I've heard everything from "No", to "One Lane Open", to "Detour through Chesaw".
Thanks for any accurate info.
  • Heather Leah Maggi The Washington state patrol should be able to answer for sure.

  • Tom Severns we drove to sports in tonasket and road fine

  • Susan Coffee I just drove through. . .. . Both lanes were open. You could definitely see water damage but the road was fine.

  • Bill Baldwin I just got back Dave. Road is fine. There was a wreck right on the hanging rock curve. Both rigs in the road with a state patrol there. Side swiped each other. Probably wont be there too long.

Five things to watch: Seahawks at Panthers
    (Week 1)

    Sunday, Sept. 8 | 10 a.m. PDT | Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, N.C. | TV: Fox

Can you stand it? It's almost Sunday, which means it's almost time for the start of Seahawks football -- for real, this time. No more preseason games ... Sunday's matchup with Carolina is the real deal, and from here on the games all count. It's the beginning of the most anticipated season in Seahawks history.

But the season opener in Charlotte, N.C., will be no cakewalk for the Seahawks. They face a dynamic quarterback, a headstrong running back and one of the most devastating linebacking corps in the league. No wonder head coach Pete Carroll and his staff have been working on their game plan for Carolina for several weeks.

The accomplishments of Vernon Adams never get old. And they are just beginning for the football player with the new nickname, “Big Play VA.”

The top plays and honors of the Eastern Washington University sophomore quarterback have been encapsulated in a new web site located at www.BigPlayVA.com. Adams and his teammates open their home schedule on Saturday (Sept. 7) against Western Oregon at 4:05 p.m. at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash.

“We are extremely excited to be able to roll out this microsite housing all of the terrific plays and accolades that Vernon has amassed in the short time he has been on the field for us at Eastern,” said Eastern athletic director Bill Chaves. “This site allows our fans to access directly this content without having to maneuver through multiple sites. Our University and athletic staff should be commended greatly for making this happen in such a short turnaround and we look forward to updating the site as the season progresses.”

Featured are some of the top plays by Adams, including his incredible scramble and touchdown throw against Sacramento State on Oct. 20, 2012, which was one of eight finalists for the GEICO Play of the Year. His game-winning touchdown run against Oregon State on Aug. 31, 2013, is also on the site. He had a school-record of 518 yards of total offense in the 49-46 upset over the Beavers in only the fourth-ever win by a NCAA Football Championship Subdivision school over a ranked member of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.

The many accolades Adams won as a result of the OSU victory are also featured, as well as an interview on the Jim Rome Show. His complete bio, statistics and information on EWU tickets and the Gateway Project are also prominent.

Adams, who is from Pasadena, Calif., and graduated in 2011 from Alemany High School, accounted for 78 yards during the monumental 75-yard game-winning scoring drive for the Eagles against the Beavers. Adams had 411 yards (17th-most in school history) and four touchdowns on 23-of-30 passing, and added 107 yards and two TD on the ground.

He broke the previous record for total yards of 493 set by Todd Bernett against Montana in 1994. His total was the FCS Week 1 high, as was his impressive 235.747 pass efficiency rating. He picked up where he left off last season when he had 364 passing yards and a school-record six touchdown passes in the second half alone of EWU’s 45-42 loss to Sam Houston State in the FCS Playoffs.

Adams currently has a career passing efficiency rating of 170.0 (63 percent, 2,372 yards, 24 TD, 8 INT), which ranks as the school record. A year ago, Adams ranked fourth in FCS in passing efficiency (160.80), and was the only freshman in the top 24 of the rankings. His efficiency rating also ranked fourth all-time in school history. In nine games as a starter and three as a sub, he completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 1,961 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Eagles, who were the 2010 NCAA Division I champions.
